Realistic Torches is a great mod for Minecraft 1.9, 1.8.8 and 1.8. In fact, the difficulty sets in when the torches burn out. The default setting is for 60 minutes of burn time. This is meant to give you an incentive to find permanent light sources, like glowstone. For example, if you leave your dwellings lit only by torches you may be left in the dark in the long run. But this addition gives a solution for players that prefers the aesthetic of torches in Minecraft. You can craft a lot of permanent torches by using glowstone crystals instead of coal. This still forces you to seek out better light but at least you can still use the torch if you want.

Realistic Torches Mod, like its name says, adds more realistic torches to Minecraft. It’s a very interesting feature when it comes to crafting light sources. It does as the name describes and provides a more realistic experience with torches. The torches start unlit when originally crafted and will need to be manually lit using flint & steel or with a matchbox. Realistic Torches is a lightweight mod designed for modpack makers looking to add difficulty to the early game. The primary feature of this mod causes torches to burn out after a configurable amount of time, encouraging players to move toward more permanent light sources early on.
Torches in Minecraft can only light up an environment by placing them on a surface. As you all know, carrying a lit torch is not possible. Fortunately, there are many plugins available that solve this issue. The previously featured RWtorchLight plugin for example, which brightens up a small area around the player using a glowstone that will follow the player wherever they go. However, if you would rather not get chased by a glowstone, Hold-able Torches may be a better choice.
