  • My friend Julie, who owns the shop “” gave me this cool little tag to hang on Quincy’s carseat or stroller. It said “Please wash your hands before touching mine.” It was unbelievable the amount of people who would read the sign, comment on what a good idea it was and then REACH IN TO TOUCH QUINCY. Seriously?

"Please wash your hands before touching mine"

You can get a sign with that phrase to put on your baby's stroller, to keep germy strangers from touching your precious.

I have never seen such a thing in person but my first reaction to the picture was shock and revulsion. I do respect that some babies might have particularly sensitive immune systems, and I appreciate that lots of ill-mannered people touch babies without being invited to. But I still find this sign hard to swallow in a way I have trouble explaining.

Basically, I think I'm a little insulted by the implication that I (and anyone who sees your sign) is out to infect your sprog. And I say this as someone who is not interested in touching babies anyway, and I border on germophobic at times - I'm aware of all the viruses crawling all over most people. However, I'm also aware that babies have been touched by strangers since the dawn of time, and it doesn't seem to have slowed anybody down. Also I suspect (but am not certain) that their immune systems usually get an overall benefit from all these new experiences.

What do you think? What would you think if you saw such a sign?

My son informed me the other day that his French teacher said people in France are being discouraged from greeting each other with the customary kiss on each cheek because of fear about swine flu. Our local bank has a sign posted on the door saying to please not be offended that employees are not shaking your hand because it is just an effort to try to minimize the spread of germs. Seems you just can’t be too careful nowadays. (Though it still turns my stomach a bit when a restaurant washroom has a sign reminding employees to wash their hands before returning to work; isn’t that just common sense?)

A cute, cuddly baby is a magnet for well-meaning admirers who might not realize that their loving hands could be spreading germs. Ever wish you could find a tactful way to tell someone to keep their grubby paws off your child?

Enter a company called , which manufacturers small stop signs that you can attach to strollers, car seats, and the like. These pink, blue, or red signs bear the message, “Please wash your hands before touching mine.”

While I can imagine some people thinking it is rude to post such an announcement alongside a baby, I’m also betting many mothers love the idea. What is your opinion?

If so, search no more! The folks at have created a sign to hang on your child’s stroller that says “Please wash your hands before touching mine.” The signs sell for $7.95 and come in red, blue and pink. (Pink is currently sold out, which is interesting – wonder if people are more protective of girl babies?)
